It’s that time of the year where you might be browsing your favorite team’s roster and suddenly a name you expected to see has vanished.
Poof!
Coaches tell us their players are family but often when one of their own disappears, the next-of-kin, aka fans of the program, gets no update.
An aside from us at LadySwish. Hello again! We’ve been absent way too long. But we’re gearing up for another season of ‘Swish.)
So we’ll start by taking a glance at some offseason moves, shall we say, along with an update on eligible transfers. This isn’t a complete list, but we’ve pruned through and come up with a few notables.
We’ll start with Old Dominion. Check the roster lately? Only former walk-on Taylor Edwards from Karen Barefoot’s coaching days remains and we’re just starting Nikki McCray’s second season. The most surprising absence is point guard MaKayla Timmons. Timmons, now a senior, was a workhorse last year — started 30 times, averaged 9 ppg, 3 rpg, 3.5 apg. Her academics are strong so that’s not an issue and she will graduate in May. She would have another year if she chooses to pursue a graduate degree elsewhere.
That leaves ODU without any seniors. Senior forward Carley Brew is not going to play a final year. Senior point guard Carolina Bernardeco transferred to Queens University of Charlotte. It’s a stunningly fast transformation even in a game where coaching changes and transfers are routine.
In other news, former Virginia Tech star Chanette Hicks – remember her? – is now a Spartan. We’re told Norfolk State coach Larry Vickers wants to give the ex-standout at Norfolk’s Maury High some time to settle in before he comments at length about her return home. Tech’s all-time leader in career steals who started 16 games last season left the Hokies in February and didn’t resurface on the basketball court until the Spartans hosted their version of Midnight Madness earlier this month. She will have to sit out this season and will have one left.
Speaking of the Hokies, their exodus also includes Celeste Akoro (Southeast Missouri), Sierra Votaw (Eastern Florida State College) and Diandra DaRosa (Seton Hall). None of those players saw time last season. Despite all the subtractions, the Hokies head into the season fully stocked as all five starters and all seven of the players who appeared in Tech’s WNIT final against Indiana remain in place.
VCU’s Bria Gibson is now at High Point and Sandra Skinner is at Western Kentucky along with Virginia post Jae’lisa Allen, who played six games last season and is immediately eligible.
Ariana Freeman is indeed a graduate student at George Mason after transferring from Colorado, but an Achilles injury will prevent the 5-9 guard from seeing any time.
Liberty’s Apilyn Bonny has moved on to Eastern Florida State College, Iva Ilic is at Division II Nova Southeastern and Ola Makurat transferred to Utah. Makurat is the most significant, having started four games, averaging 7.1 ppg and 4.3 rpg. ODU fans will remember Ilic, a 6-2 guard/forward from Poland, for the five 3-pointers she drained in the season opener last year.
Savannah Felgemacher is eligible at Radford after transferring from JMU two years ago. The last time the 6-3 redshirt junior played she had arguably the best game of her young career at Radford’s expense with 11 points and 14 rebounds in an 80-59 victory over the Highlanders in the opening round of the WNIT. Richmond has added Daijia Ruffin, a 5-9 guard from UT-Martin, who will be immediately eligible.
The Dukes will have Siena transfer Jackie Benitez, the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, in uniform. Debra Ferguson, who transferred from Virginia to JMU but did not play last season due to injury, is now a student assistant coach to Sean O’Regan.
Among the new names on the Hampton roster: Mina Porte, a 5-9 guard/forward who put up big numbers for North Dakota State School of Science, a two-year school in Wahpeton, N.D. and 6-2 center Charlisa Jenkins from Gardner-Webb. Hand it to coach David Six for having another player from a North Dakota school on the roster, Dior Dioum from Dakota College of Bottineau, also a two-year, which hails itself as the best kept secret in the state. The 5-9 forward is originally from The Netherlands.
Senior Kayla Lupoe returns to the Lady Pirates after sitting out last season due to conflicts with the classes for her architecture major. .
W&M’s Nari Garner has moved on to Division II Valdosta State.
Not a player, but welcome to new Longwood coach Rebecca Tillett, whose staff includes the former Virginia standout Breyana Mason as director of operations
Ok, after missing for weeks now, Makayla’s Name is now back on the ODU WBB Roster Page.
What gives ?
Looking into it.
