So we’re introducing this new feature — 5 things you didn’t know about . . . (fill in the blank with a player or if we get adventurous, something else).
Kicking off the series — Radford’s own Savannah Felgemacher. The 6-3 junior forward sat out last year after transferring from JMU and man, has she played liked she missed it. She opened her Highlander career with 21 points and 21 boards in 28 minutes in a season-opening win against South Carolina State.
Admittedly, when we were scheduled to talk with her Thursday after the Radford-ETSU game and we saw the Highlanders trailing by 23, let’s say the vibes weren’t good. But, wow, Radford rallied for a 79-64 victory behind 23 points (three treys) and 11 boards from the reigning Big South Player of the Week who was more than happy to chat afterward.
About that hair color: Remember the jet black waves from Harrisonburg? At Radford she’s the process of going back to her natural color — a dark dirty blonde, “I’m trying not to fry it so I dye it every now and again. Right now it’s between brown and red.”
Your favorites: Growing up, despite growing up in Lady Vol country, she gravitated toward UNC, and “I cannot tell you why,” she says. Fave players these days are Blake Griffin and Kevin Durant.
A quirky hobby: “I’m very OCD,” she admits. “I love to clean. I love to organize. It’s my stress reliever.” When she can’t sleep, you won’t catch her popping Sleep-eze. “If I can’t fall asleep, I get up and do some dishes.”
So naturally: At the top of her Christmas list? A new set of pots and pans so she can whip up her favorite dishes — fried pork chops with tomato basil soup and salmon and asparagus. Dad fixed her coffee maker, but a new one isn’t such a bad thing, is it?
Binge stuff: “I’ve just finished ‘Friends’.” That makes four times now for the series. She likes Joey the best. (Nobody ever says Monica . . . )
Pets (yes, this is 6 things. We’re not counting the hair color as one): “I’m not a crazy cat lady,” but she adores her two kitties. One is a calico, Maisym and the other a domestic shelter, Mowgli (think “Jungle Book). Her pet chihuahua, Ralphie, (“A Christmas Story” name) is back home in Church Hill, Tennessee.

A fan from afar since she signed with the Dukes. Glad to see she is off to a great start with her new team and school. ~Curt Dudley
