Christopher Newport and Randolph-Macon both won their first-round games in the NCAA Div. III women’s basketball tournament on Friday night, and CNU senior Chelsie Schweers achieved an impressive – if offbeat – milestone during the Captains’ victory.

Schweers scored 33 points in CNU’s 81-52 victory over York at the Freeman Center in Newport News. That gives her a career total of 2,728 points, moving her past ODU legend Anne Donovan (2,719) and former Hampton University star Jackie Dolberry (2,727) and making her the top collegiate women’s basketball scorer in Virginia history.

Yes, it’s an odd distinction, because it combines players at different schools and different levels of competition. But it says a lot for Schweers that she is the top scorer of all time in a state that produced players such as Donovan, Nancy Lieberman, Dawn Staley and Dawn Evans, just to name a few. So Ladyswish sends congratulations out to Chelsie and wishes her luck in CNU’s remaining tournament games.

She had quite a night on Friday. Schweers’ 33 points included seven 3-pointers and 4-for-4 free-throw shooting. She also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and no turnovers as CNU routed York. Barbara Davis had 14 points, and Jessica Moore had 10 rebounds. CNU will play Johns Hopkins (a 76-68 winner over Richard Stockton)  in the second round at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Freeman Center.

Randolph-Macon beat Bridgewater State 80-69 Friday night at Annville, Pa. Taylor Wieczorek had 27 points and 15 rebounds, and the unsinkable Molly Brown had 14 points. Randolph-Macon will come back on Saturday to play host team Lebanon Valley, which beat Neumann 83-68.
